Fall is a season of change. And as three course records fell at the annual Hersey Lake Invitational cross-country meet on Saturday, 616 runners from across Northeastern Ontario proved this season will be no different.

Anne Boucher of Ecole Jacques Cartier, Elisa Colantonio of Ecole secondaire Theriault (EST), and Jeremie Bourget of Ecole Sacre Coeur -- all of Timmins -- each broke the tape with precedent-setting times.

"It was a rough start," said Colantonio, who blasted the midget girls 2,900-metre course in 11 minutes and 20 seconds to chop 12 seconds off Sabrina Lefort's five-year-old record in the 28-competitor field. "I fell at the beginning. People were excited and I just collided with another girl. I learned that anything can happen at the start."

The Grade 9 EST student was able to regroup after her troublesome start and move up from the middle of the field to take the race.

Bourget, a Grade 7 athlete, emphasized his youthful prowess on the running circuit by shaving four seconds off the Grade-8 record set by Kyle Pichette in 2002.

"I wanted the record," said the 12-year-old, who moved up from third spot in the 37-racer field to cover 2,900m in 10:17 and steal the win. "It was good because I know the trails here, and I love the hills."

Boucher blazed the 1,240m course in 5:08 to nab the Grade 6 record with 10 seconds to spare.

Theriaut's Andrea Paquette was just off the 10-year-old junior girls record set by EST alumnus Melanie Lamoureux by crushing the 4,160m course in 16:25 and the rest of the 34-runner category by 1:21.

"I felt really good," said Paquette. "I just started at my normal pace and kept it up over the race."

Matt Walters of West Ferris Secondary School in North Bay led from start to finish in senior boys action, trashing the 60-racer field by 61 seconds over 6,970m.

Theriault dominated the day by taking the overall high school title. The Knights of O'Gorman High School earned a second-place showing, just ahead of Ecole secondaire Algonquin of North Bay.
